Abstract

Ranking fuzzy numbers plays an important role in a fuzzy decision making process. A new approach for ranking fuzzy numbers is introduced based on a fuzzy reference set to evaluate quality performance of purchased goods. An overall ranking index is obtained for each competing fuzzy number using the full information of fuzzy numbers. The computational process of the proposed method is straightforward and is practically capable of comparing similar fuzzy numbers. The proposed method is an absolute ranking and no pairwise comparison of fuzzy numbers is necessary. Furthermore, the proposed method possesses several valuable characteristics as compared to the other comparable methods examined in this work. The proposed approach also proves an effective way to evaluate quality performance through an empirical example.
